New Venetian Fortress walls above Corfu Old Town

Itineraries that actually flow

Routes built around walking distance, opening hours and meal times.

24 hours

One day in Corfu

This loop stays inside the UNESCO core. No bus. Start at the fortress gates so you walk downhill through town in the heat. Summer hours below are from odysseus.culture.gr, checked August 2026; winter closing is earlier (08:30–15:30).

Tickets before you walk: Old Fortress €10 / €5 reduced. Buy at the gate. Liston coffee is cash or card. Taverna lunch €14–28 per person (city.yaml band).
  1. 08:00 — Old Fortress Cross the iron bridge over the Contrafossa. Allow 90 minutes for the clock tower, church of St George and the sea walls. Last photography is from the lighthouse terrace — it is steep and not step-free.
  2. 10:15 — Spianada & Liston The square is free. Sit under the arcades for freddo espresso €2.50–4. This is the same ground used for cricket and, at Easter, the Botides pot-throwing (visitgreece.gr).
  3. 11:30 — Campiello to Saint Spyridon Fifteen minutes of stepped lanes. The church is the island’s patron; dress shoulders covered. No ticket. If a liturgy is on, wait at the door rather than cutting through.
  4. 13:15 — lunch in Campiello or Mouragia Order pastitsada or sofrito, not a generic “Greek mixed grill”. Confirm fish by the kilo before it hits the grill. Details: Eat & Drink.
  5. 15:30 — New Fortress lookout or Asian Art Museum The New Fortress ramparts are a short uphill from the market. The Museum of Asian Art (Palace of St Michael and St George) is the indoor alternative — check odysseus.culture.gr for the day’s hours before you walk over.
  6. 19:00 — Garitsa seafront Flat 20-minute walk south of Spianada. Sunset hits the Old Fortress from this side. Dinner here is quieter than Liston and better with children.

Cruise passengers with six hours: fortress + Liston + Campiello only. Skip the museum. Be at the New Port 90 minutes before last tender; Line 15 also links port and San Rocco (€1.30 Zone A, Astiko KTEL Kerkyras).

48 hours

Two days — add depth

Day 1 as above. Day 2 leaves town on blue buses. Buy tickets at a kiosk or machine before boarding — on-board costs more (Astiko KTEL Kerkyras, checked August 2026). Zone A is €1.30; Zone B is €1.80. A day pass is €5 if you stack Kanoni and Achilleion.

  1. 09:00 — bus to Kanoni Zone A. Ride to the Pontikonisi / Vlacherna viewpoint. The mouse-island shot is from the café terrace, not from a boat you have to take. Boats to Pontikonisi run in season — fare check locally, about a few euros return.
  2. 10:30 — Mon Repos Walk or stay on the coastal path. Park and beach are the flat family option. Combine with Kanoni rather than as a third bus ride.
  3. 13:00 — lunch, then Achilleion Gardens €7 / €5 reduced; palace interior closed for restoration (achillion-corfu.gr, August 2026). Hours: 08:00–20:00 summer, 08:00–16:00 winter. Zone B bus €1.80 or a taxi from Kanoni. Allow 90 minutes in the gardens; the Kaiser terrace is the view, not a maze of rooms.
  4. 17:30 — back to town Same bus corridor. If you miss the last frequent blue bus, budget a taxi rather than waiting on a dark village road.
  5. 20:00 — Mouragia harbour Seafood by the old port. Read the kilo price. Pair with the Getting Around last-bus times if you are staying outside the UNESCO grid.

Do not reverse the order in summer: Achilleion gardens in the 14:00 sun are exposed. Kanoni in the morning, palace in late afternoon.

72 hours

Three days — add a day trip

Days 1–2 in town. Day 3 pick one of these — stacking Paleokastritsa and Paxos in one day fails on ferry and bus clocks.

Day-3 choiceHowTime / fareDo this
PaleokastritsaGreen bus A945 min, €2.50 one-way (ktelkerkyras.gr, Aug 2026)Monastery (free, donation), one cove swim, taverna lunch, last bus toward evening — confirm on the day
Paxos & AntipaxosFerry from Corfu port~60–90 min; check corfuport.grOnly in calm seas. Pre-book return. Not a “maybe we will see” add-on
Pelekas sunsetBlue bus Zone B20 min, €1.80 (Astiko KTEL)Shorter than Paleokastritsa; viewpoint, not a beach day
Sidari / Canal d’AmourGreen bus A275 min, €3.70 (ktelkerkyras.gr)North-coast geology. Long day. Start at first coach

Full routing, including Albania (Saranda / Butrint) ferries: Day Trips and Paleokastritsa & northwest coast. Green coaches do not run late; if you stay for dinner in a west-coast village, budget a taxi back.

Bad weather

The rainy-day plan

Ionian rain is real from October to April. Do not “do the fortress anyway” in a thunderstorm — staff close upper gates. Build an indoor morning and a covered-arcade afternoon.

  1. Morning — two museums, separate tickets Archaeological Museum of Corfu and the Museum of Asian Art. Check odysseus.culture.gr the night before: hours and closure days change. They are walkable from Spianada in 10–15 minutes.
  2. Lunch under Liston The arcades stay dry. This is the one time Liston prices are worth it — you are buying shelter, not a view.
  3. Afternoon — municipal market Near the New Fortress. Kumquat spoon sweets and olive oil. Compare labels; “Corfu kumquat” is the island souvenir, not a generic orange liqueur.
  4. If it still sheets down Cinema on Mantzarou — listings local. Or sit in a Guilford Street bakery. Skip Paleokastritsa: west-coast roads feel narrower in rain, and coves are no fun in a swell.
Families

Slower version with kids

The UNESCO grid is cobbles and steps. A full-size stroller is a fight in Campiello. Use a carrier in the lanes; unroll the stroller on Spianada and Garitsa.

  • Day 1 morning: Old Fortress only until the first staircase protest. Ice cream on Liston. Nap.
  • Day 1 afternoon: Mon Repos park and the small beach — the flattest “nature” near town. Shade under pines. No ticket for the park paths themselves; palace hours if you go inside — check on site.
  • Day 2: Achilleion gardens only (€7). Interior is closed anyway. The statues are the child-friendly bit; the history lecture is not.
  • Day 3: Paleokastritsa on the first A9, one cove, early bus back. Pack water and snacks; village shops close mid-afternoon in shoulder season.

Playgrounds, shade and what to skip: Family Guide. Blue-bus Zone A tickets are still €1.30 each; there is no separate child fare published on astikoktelkerkyras.gr — confirm at the kiosk for under-fives.

Common questions

Itinerary questions

Is one day enough for Corfu?

One day covers the Old Fortress, Spianada, Liston and Campiello on foot — enough for a cruise stop or overnight layover. You miss Achilleion, Kanoni and any beach. Allow two days minimum for town plus one suburban sight.

What is the best order to see Corfu?

Start at the Old Fortress when gates open (08:00 summer), descend to Spianada before lunch heat, weave Old Town lanes, save Kanoni or Achilleion for day two. Pair sights with bus zones — buy kiosk tickets before boarding.

Should I book a guided tour or walk it myself?

The UNESCO core is self-guided on foot — our map routes cover four walks. Book a tour for Angelokastro, Albania day trips, or Paxos cave boats where operators require guides. Easter processions need no ticket — arrive early.
