Best time to visit Corfu
Weather, crowds and prices month by month.
The short answer
May and September are the sweet spot — warm enough to swim (sea ~22–24 °C), Old Fortress open until 20:00, and hotel rates below July–August peaks (HNMS climate normals, checked Aug 2026).

Spring, summer, autumn, winter
Spring brings Easter processions and green hills — buses and sites ramp up from April. Summer is beach and festival season: blue bus day pass €5, green buses to coasts on full timetables (Astiko KTEL / KTEL Kerkyras, checked Aug 2026). Autumn keeps warm water with fewer cruise-day crowds in the Old Town. Winter suits museum-focused trips — many seaside tavernas close, but Spianada cafés stay open for locals.
Crowds versus prices
July–August push mid-range hotels to €70–130/night and above (seasonal — check locally). Easter week matches August for Old Town occupancy. May, June and September offer the same ferry and bus network with easier restaurant seating on Liston. Winter cuts accommodation roughly 30–40% versus August in many booking curves — exact discount varies by property.
Cruise ship days spike midday crowds around Spianada; mornings before 10:00 or evenings after 18:00 stay quieter year-round.
Orthodox Easter on Corfu
Corfu’s Easter is a reason to book early, not a footnote. Botides — clay pots thrown from balconies onto Spianada on Holy Saturday morning — draws islanders and visitors into the square. Processions for Saint Spyridon and Holy Week services fill the UNESCO lanes. Dates move with the Orthodox calendar (often April; sometimes late March) — confirm the year’s Holy Saturday before you lock flights.
Expect August-level hotel pressure in the Old Town for Holy Week, cooler swimming than May, and full café occupancy on Liston. If you want Botides without peak-summer heat, Easter is the cultural trade-off. If you want beaches first, choose May or September instead and catch Saint Spyridon’s December feast (12 Dec) on a winter cultural trip.
Rain, green hills and packing
Corfu is greener than the Cyclades because it gets more rain — especially November–March (HNMS normals). That is a feature for spring wildflowers and olive country, not a failure of Greek weather. Pack a light rain layer even in May; summer thunderstorms are shorter but can soak an open fortress visit. After rain, Campiello cobbles are slippery — flat shoes beat polished soles.
Ferry and green-bus day trips still run in shoulder season; some beach bars close from mid-October. Winter museum hours (Old Fortress often 08:30–15:30) leave time for indoor plans when the sky opens.
Timing questions
What is the best month to visit Corfu?
May and September — warm sea, summer opening hours at the Old Fortress (08:00–20:00), and lower hotel pressure than July–August. April works for Easter culture if you accept cooler swimming; October for quiet museums and harvest season.
Is Corfu too hot in summer?
July–August afternoons often reach 31 °C (HNMS normals). Plan fortress visits for morning, siesta indoors 13:00–17:00, and beach time after 16:00. Liston shade helps but cobbled lanes radiate heat — carry water on walking days.
Is Corfu worth visiting in winter?
Yes for Old Town, museums and Saint Spyridon feast (12 December) without beach expectations. Many coastal restaurants close; buses run reduced timetables. Old Fortress winter hours 08:30–15:30 — enough for a focused cultural weekend.
