Which part to choose, how to get there, and what a day costs.

Choose

Which part of Paleokastritsa & northwest coast?

Theotokos monastery above the Paleokastritsa coves
Theotokos monastery — free entry, modest dress, last buses back before evening

Paleokastritsa village clusters six coves beneath the monastery — Agios Spyridon and Platakia are the busiest. Liapades and Glyfada add quieter pebble bays westward. Angelokastro fortress overlooks the coast from the north — needs car or tour, not a swimming stop. Pick one home cove and walk coastal paths between beaches where signed.

Angelokastro is the dramatic extra if you have a car or a booked tour — not on the A9 bus itself. Pair it with a morning swim at Paleokastritsa, then the fortress in the cooler afternoon. Opening hours change; check locally at the village before driving up the last hairpins.

Transport

Getting there without a car

Green bus A9 runs Corfu Town (port station) to Paleokastritsa in ~45 minutes — fare €2.50 (KTEL Kerkyras, checked Aug 2026). First useful departures from town around 08:00; last returns often before 20:00 — photograph the timetable at the stop. Taxis from town ~€35–45 on meter — agree approximate fare before leaving. No blue city bus reaches the northwest coves directly.

Plan

A realistic one-day plan

08:30 bus from port station → 09:15 monastery visit (free entry, donations welcome) → 10:30 swim at main cove → 13:00 taverna lunch → optional boat to sea caves (price at jetty) → 17:00 bus back. Skip Angelokastro unless you hire a taxi for a 30-minute detour. Pack reef shoes — pebbles dominate.

Costs

What a day there costs

Bus return €5 total · lunch €14–22 · sunbeds €8–12 where offered · cave boat €15–25 (check locally). Budget €45–65 per person excluding taxi. Monastery and walking paths free. Cash helps at beach kiosks — ATMs exist in Paleokastritsa village but queues form in August.

On the ground

How to spend the day without missing the last A9

Photograph the return timetable at Corfu port station before you board. A9 is 45 minutes and €2.50 one-way (ktelkerkyras.gr, August 2026). Last useful coaches are often before 20:00. A taxi back is €35–45 on the meter — agree a ballpark before you leave a cove at dusk.

Sequence that works: monastery first (cool, free, donation box), then one cove swim, then lunch, then a cave boat only if the sea is flat (jetty price, typically a few tens of euros — check locally). Angelokastro is a separate inland fortress, not a beach. Liapades and Glyfada are quieter than the main Paleokastritsa cluster but add walking or a short taxi. Reef shoes: the coves are pebble.

Budget €45–65 per person for bus + lunch + sunbeds, more with a cave boat. ATMs exist in the village and have August queues. Cash for kiosks. This is the west coast — it is not a spontaneous add-on after a 16:00 fortress visit. Pair with the three-day plan on Itineraries.

Don't stack

What not to combine with Paleokastritsa

Do not add Achilleion on the same day as A9. Do not add Sidari. Do not add a sunset at Pelekas unless you have a car and are skipping the last bus on purpose. One west-coast village, one swim, one lunch, one photograph of the timetable.

Angelokastro is a fortress inland, not a cove. Liapades is the quieter walk if the main Paleokastritsa cluster is a car park in August. Cash for kiosks; ATM queues in the village. Taxi ballpark back to town €35–45 on the meter if you miss the coach.

Common questions

How do I get to Paleokastritsa & northwest coast from Corfu?

Green bus A9 from the port KTEL station — 45 minutes, €2.50 (KTEL Kerkyras, checked Aug 2026). Taxi ~€35–45 from town. No direct blue city bus; car hire works if you plan multiple northwest stops the same day.

Can you visit Paleokastritsa & northwest coast as a day trip?

Yes — morning bus out, monastery and one cove, lunch, afternoon return before last service (~20:00). Tight but standard without a car. Add Angelokastro only if you taxi — not on the bus route.

Which part of Paleokastritsa & northwest coast is best?

Main Paleokastritsa coves for first-timers — bus stop, tavernas, boats. Liapades/Glyfada for quieter pebbles if you walk or drive. Angelokastro for fortress views, not swimming — check road access locally.
