Pontikonisi and Vlacherna monastery from Kanoni

Corfu with kids & families

Stroller routes, shade, playgrounds and the museums kids actually like.

Logistics

Stroller-friendly routes and shade

Spianada and Garitsa offer flat paths — avoid Campiello steps with a buggy. Mon Repos park has shaded lanes and a playground near the palace gate (check opening hours locally). Blue buses require folding strollers; drivers expect you to hold infants during boarding (Zone A €1.30, Astiko KTEL, checked Aug 2026).

Carry sun hats — shade disappears on fortress ramparts after 11:00. Public toilets are scarce in the Old Town; use café customers’ facilities with a purchase or stop at the port terminal building.

Attractions

What works with children

Old Fortress (€10, odysseus.culture.gr) — ramparts fascinate older kids; not stroller-friendly on upper paths. Achilleion gardens (€7) — statues and terraces without the closed palace interior. Kanoni — plane-spotting plus Pontikonisi boats (fare check at jetty). Mon Repos beach — calm water 25 minutes’ walk from town.

Skip tight museum rooms during nap time; Asian Art Museum suits quiet tweens more than toddlers. Green bus to Paleokastritsa (A9, €2.50) works as a family beach day — allow 45 minutes each way.

Eating

Eating out with kids

Tavernas expect children — high chairs appear on request at Garitsa and Liston venues. Order pastitsada (mild stew), grilled fish, or sofrito in smaller portions; bread and salad arrive first. Budget €14–28 for a family taverna dinner excluding drinks (check menus locally). Supermarkets on Alexandras Avenue stock nappies and formula.

Indoors

Rainy-day and heat-escape options

Heat or rain: Museum of Asian Art and Archaeological Museum on separate tickets (odysseus.culture.gr). Municipal library and cinema on Mantzarou street schedule English films sporadically — check posters. Corfu Aquarium at Paleokastritsa is reachable by green bus when open (hours on site). Liston cafés work as 90-minute breaks while storms pass.

A workable day

A family day that does not fight the cobbles

Spianada and Garitsa are the only reliably flat paths in the centre. Campiello steps punish a full-size stroller; use a carrier in the lanes and unroll the buggy on the square. Blue-bus drivers expect a folded stroller. Adult Zone A is €1.30 (Astiko KTEL Kerkyras, August 2026); child reductions exist — check astikoktelkerkyras.gr for the age cut-off rather than guessing at the kiosk.

Old Fortress (€10) works for older children on the lower walls; the lighthouse climb is optional. Achilleion is gardens only (€7) — statues, not a palace tour. Mon Repos park and the small beach are the nap-friendly afternoon. Paleokastritsa on green A9 (€2.50, 45 min) is a full day: first bus, one cove, early return. Public toilets in the Old Town are scarce; buy a coffee and use the café.

Tavernas expect children. High chairs appear if you ask, more often in Garitsa than in tiny Campiello rooms. Supermarkets on Alexandras Avenue stock nappies. Heat: fortress ramparts after 11:00 have almost no shade — hats, water, and a Liston ice-cream pause.

Skip

What to skip with small children

Skip the full Campiello stroller experiment. Skip Achilleion interior — it is closed anyway. Skip Angelokastro unless you have a car and older kids who like ruins. Skip a late A9 back from Paleokastritsa; the last coach is the constraint, not the cove.

Do the fortress in the morning, Mon Repos sand after the nap, ice cream on Liston as bribery. Play equipment sits in Mon Repos near the palace gate and along bits of Garitsa — not a fenced municipal playground on Spianada. Child bus fares: read astikoktelkerkyras.gr, do not invent an age at the kiosk.

Common questions

Family questions

Is Corfu good for families?

Yes — compact Old Town, calm Garitsa swimming, Mon Repos park and green-bus beach days to Paleokastritsa (A9, €2.50). Cobbles challenge strollers in Campiello; choose Spianada or Garitsa hotels for easier access. Kids eat well in tavernas from €14–28 per adult main.

Are there playgrounds in central Corfu?

Mon Repos park has play equipment near the palace entrance. Spianada lawns suit ball games — not fenced playgrounds. Suburban parks along the Garitsa path add swings; ask your hotel for the nearest updated site — municipal listings change seasonally.

Do children pay for public transport?

Astiko KTEL publishes reduced fares for children on blue buses — check astikoktelkerkyras.gr for age thresholds and current price (Zone A adult €1.30, checked Aug 2026). Green KTEL coaches apply separate child tariffs at ktelkerkyras.gr kiosks.
