Morning

Breakfast and coffee culture

Liston cafés serve brioche, yoghurt with honey and freddo espresso for €2.50–4 (menus posted, checked Aug 2026). Bakeries (fourno) sell spinach pie and koulourakia from €1.50 — look for morning queues on Guilford Street. Greeks often eat breakfast lightly and save appetite for late lunch; hotels include buffet from 07:30 in mid-range properties.

Markets

The markets and what to buy there

The municipal market near the New Fortress sells olive oil, kumquat spoon sweets and dried herbs on weekday mornings — prices vary by stall (check locally). Supermarkets on Alexandras Avenue stock picnic supplies for Mon Repos or Paleokastritsa day trips. Kumquat products are the regulated island souvenir — compare labels for sugar content before gifting.

Dinner

Tavernas and mezedopoleia by area

Mouragia (Old Port) — seafood by the harbour, mains €12–24. Campiello lanes — pastitsada specialists in family rooms. Garitsa — quieter seafront tavernas, good for children. Liston — higher prices, best for drinks not full dinner. Ask for the day's fish (psari simera) priced by weight — confirm per kilo before ordering.

Drinks

Wine, spirits and where to drink them

Local kumquat liqueur and ginger beer appear on most menus. Ionian white wines (Kakotrigis, Verdea) pair with fish — glass €4–6 in tavernas. Ouzo arrives with meze on harbour tables. Liston cocktail bars charge €8–12 — read prices on chalkboards. Supermarkets sell Robola and other Greek labels from €6 bottle for room picnics.

Prices

What a meal actually costs

Budget lunch (pie + coffee) €5–8 · taverna dinner with wine €14–28 per person (city.yaml band, checked Aug 2026) · Liston sit-down with drinks €25–35 · seafood by weight can exceed €40 if you pick premium fish — always confirm kilo price. Tap water is safe in town; bottled €0.50–1 in shops. Service charge not universal — rounding up 5–10% is common.

How to order

What a Corfiot table actually looks like

Corfu cooking is Venetian-Ionian, not generic taverna Greece. Pastitsada is a Sunday stew — rooster or beef in a spice-heavy tomato sauce. Sofrito is veal with garlic and white wine, no tomato. Bourdeto is a pepper-hot fish stew; bianco is the lemon-garlic cousin. If the menu only lists moussaka and souvlaki, you are in a tourist default, not a Corfiot kitchen.

Fish by the kilo is the classic sting. Ask the price per kilo, watch it weighed, then agree. Harbour tables in Mouragia are the usual place this happens. Taverna dinner with house wine sits in the €14–28 band we publish (checked August 2026). Liston sit-down with cocktails runs higher — you pay for the arcade, not the kitchen.

Breakfast is light: bakery pie plus coffee under €8 if you skip the hotel buffet. Greeks eat lunch late. If you sit down at 18:30 you will eat with other visitors; 21:00 is the local slot. Card machines work in town; village kafeneia and beach kiosks still want cash. Rounding up 5–10% is enough; a service line on the bill means you do not add another 10%.

Shop

What to buy if you are self-catering one night

Alexandras Avenue supermarkets cover picnic water, fruit and nappies. The municipal market by the New Fortress is morning-only for oil, herbs and kumquat sweets — compare sugar on the label. Nikiforou Theotoki is the mandolato street.

Kumquat liqueur is the legal island souvenir, not a generic orange bottle. Taste before you commit to a large bottle; distillery counters in town often pour a free sip (check locally). Ionian whites (Kakotrigis, Verdea) by the glass in tavernas run €4–6. A supermarket bottle from €6 is the hotel-room version.

If you only eat one Corfiot plate, make it pastitsada in Campiello, not a mixed grill facing Liston. Fish by kilo at Mouragia: ask, watch the scale, then sit. That one habit saves more money than any “cheap eats” list.

Common questions

Food questions

What food is Corfu famous for?

Pastitsada (spiced meat stew), sofrito, bourdeto fish stew, nouboulo smoked pork, mandolato nougat and kumquat liqueur — Ionian recipes distinct from mainland Greek food. Order pastitsada in Old Town tavernas; compare kumquat products at municipal market stalls.

Taverna dinner €14–28 per person with house wine (city.yaml, checked Aug 2026). Liston and harbour seafood cost more — fish by weight can exceed €40. Budget lunch under €10 at bakeries; coffee €2.50–4.

Do restaurants in Corfu expect a tip?

Not obligatory — service is usually included in taverna culture. Round up 5–10% for good table service or leave small change on Liston. Pay card everywhere in town; carry cash for village kafeneia and beach kiosks.
